Eglise du Mouillage - Le Mouillage church

The district of Mouillage owes its name to the fact that the majority of boats were moored in front of him. It was the popular area of Saint Pierre, where most of the employees of the port staying. Before its destruction in 1902, the church of Mouillage of Saint-Pierre was the cathedral of Martinique. It was called the cathedrale Notre Dame du Bon Port in honor of the Virgin of the Sailors.

It was built in 1855 by engineers Scheffler and Robinet. Before Notre-Dame-du-Bon-Port, was the small church of Mouillage, built in neoclassical style in 1654 by the Dominicans.

By 1851, work to expand the building became cathedral were considered. Plans for the cathedral were designed by Scheffler, Chief Engineer Battalion of the colony Martinique and Robinet, the captain of Engineering and Chief of Highways in the district of Saint Pierre in 1855.

Scheffler decided to perpetuate the neo-classical style, already used to the Church of Mouillage. The work took several years due to various defections.

In 1902, following the eruption of Mount Pelee, it lost her title of cathedral to benefit the St. Louis Cathedral in Fort de France, became the capital city.

In 1920, it was rebuilt with donations from Victor Depaz and Monseigneur Lequien who was at the initiative of construction of Balata church.

Today, it is called "Notre Dame de L'Assomption Cathedral" and is very popular with the very devout Catholic population of Saint Pierre.
