Béké

A Béké is a white descendant of former colonists. He is a Martiniquais in his own right. Békés continue to live as a caste in Martinique. Some mix a little with the Black population.

To this day, the Békés remain the mainstays of the local economy, often heading multi-million euro fortunes. They head up banana-exporting companies, retail outlets (hypermarkets, supermarkets), oil-refining companies (S.A.R.A.), etc.

Some people in Martinique are not happy with the fact that the Békés are still in charge of the local economy. In the not-too-distant past, various social conflicts, demonstrations, and strikes showed that they were fed up with the situation.

Please note: a White person living in the Antilles is not necessarily a Béké. Békés are descendants of colonists.
